Introduction, Guiding Questions and Goals

This funding is provided by E. Marie Ponton who would like to provide support to music programs as a way of honoring the difference that music has made in her life.  As a music student and teacher herself, she knows that music changes lives.  She wishes to inspire fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students through familiarity with, and the playing of, traditional musical instruments.  As an additional bonus, Mrs. Ponton would like to accept an invitation to a performance at your school at which time she can see her contribution put to use!

Eligibility, Funding Range and Timeline:

If you are an elementary or middle school serving fourth, fifth and/or sixth grade students in the Bremerton, South, Central, or North Kitsap, or North Mason school districts, you are eligible to apply for funds.  However, individuals not in the employ of a school district may approach a school or school personnel to initiate a project or purchase.

Funds will be allocated up to a maximum amount of Ten Thousand and No/100 Dollars ($ 10,000.00).  A smaller amount than requested may be granted based on the number of viable requests.

Applications are due by April 30, 2008.

These funds will be granted by May 31st of the 2008-2009 school year.

Explanation of Funding Application:

The applications will be read by the Donor, her attorney and an experienced educator.  Requests will be granted based on these three criteria:

  1. Number of students the request will serve.
  2. Teacher’s intended use:  must be specific.
  3. Potential partnership with another teacher(s) or music program for use of the purchases funded through this grant. (not required)

Examples include the purchase of musical instruments particularly when there are students who will directly benefit; purchase of musical scores that may be used over and over; purchase of instructional CD’s, DVD’s or other instructional curricula, purchase of services of a musician(s)/artist(s).

The purchase may benefit one or more students, one or more schools, or the entire school district, e.g. an instrument(s) for a student(s); a musical score for a school wide project, performances, or curricula that may be shared throughout a district.

Application Guidelines

Please write a narrative about your intended use of the funds.  Use a standard, easy to read font in 12 pt or larger.

Be specific:  The content of your narrative should be as specific as possible.  Identify your need and your intended use.  If it is for instruments, please state which kind and the number of each; if for a score, what is the title; for curricula, what is its title and scope.

Your need:  Please address a few sentences explaining your need.  Explain what music program, if any, is in place now at your school for fourth, fifth and sixth grade students.  What would be the ideal music program for your school for these students?  How will this grant help achieve that ideal music program for this age level?

Your intended use (Your plan):  What will you purchase, how will it be used, and in what ways.  Include the number of students and teachers who will benefit from this request.  Will the effect be seasonal or year round?  For how many years?  Will the grant serve fourth, fifth and sixth grade students?  Do you have a suitable music teacher on staff and available to teach these students how to play the musical instruments to be purchased?  What transition or transfer music program, if any, is already in place for the students as they matriculate into the next grade level?

The budget:  Please fill out the budget form as accurately as possible and attach it to the narrative portion of your application.
